Pre- and Post Test Counseling

Counseling is given to those wishing to go for an HIV test prior to the test to provide the individual with basic facts and encouragement on how to live positively whether or not the results are favorable.

Post-test counseling is given to those wishing to do so. The AIDS Care Trust counselors provide moral support as well as information on the reality of living with AIDS.

ACT provides Pre-, Post-test and Ongoing Counseling at the Katutura Hospital (since 1993) as well as referring clients to the Home Based Care Unit of ACT. Approximately 5000 people are counseled per year, excluding telephonic counseling. ACT also conducts counseling of family members. TOT (Training of Trainers) is provided by the staff of the Counseling unit since 1998. The training mainly targets community volunteers and companies. The counseling was extended to farm workers in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture in 2002 after numerous requests. Approximately 40 - 60 farm workers attended each awareness session.

There are also weekly support group meetings where clients are able to share their experiences and encourage one another.

An average of 4 clients was seen weekly for counseling during the 2004 and 2005. At least half of these were follow up clients who had come for prior counseling and now had a long standing relationship with the counselors.
